Is my resting heart rate (40-50 bpm) too low?My resting heart rate is regularly between 40 and 50 beats per minute, even after I drink a couple of cups of coffee. I am a smoker, and my blood pressure is normal (last time I checked it was 112/68), but my pulse is regularly low. I am not an athletic person and I am 6'3" and a slim 165 lbs. Heart disease runs in my family; my father just had a quintuple bypass at the age of 54. Should my low resting heart rate be of any concern?

You should go in and see your doc about this. He will probably want to check things out to find out what is causing your bradycardia aka low pulse.

112/68 is not a normal blood pressure, normal is 110/90ish
70 is rather low.. 40-50 hb per minute is a little on the low side aswell.
if you havnt already you should have a docter check you out jsut to be sure. In todays Society, low bloodpressure and low heartrate are considered a sign of relative good health. too low a bloodpressure can make you pass out. if you do pass out a lot, i would definately go see a docter.

Diastolic pressure of 70 is NOT too low, as the poster above me suggested. 110/70 is actually a very good blood pressure (current "ideal" is <120/<80, which gets knocked down about 5mmHg every few years).
Resting heart rate is a bit low but nothing I would get terribly excited about on its own. With your family history and smoking habit, you should be going in for regular checkups regardless. If you start feeling dizzy when you sit or stand up, you might want to make a special appointment with the doc to have it checked out.

If you are upright and not passed out, weak, dizzy, or in other ways symptomatic, I would say you are fine. Lots of people who are athletic or reasonably active have a resting heart in the 40's and 50 's. I would be more worried about your smoking habit if your dad had a heart attack at such a young age. You can't necessarily control your genes but you can handle the triggers. Like treating high B.P. and not smoking, low fat -no trans-fat diet.and regular exercise as well as getting your cholesterol level done.
