Can severe depression give you a heart attack?

Can severe depression give you a heart attack?I have severe depression. I have not gotten treatment. Heart disease also runs in my family. My mother had a heart attack at 42 years old. I am also pretty overweight, don't eat very healthy (not to mention battling eating disorders off and on for 4 years), and rarely exercise. My blood pressure is high as well. I'm only 18 years old. Lately I feel with all my sadness and depression at it's worst, what are the odds of me having a heart attack? If so, is it soon?

No, shut up, don't tell me that I can change things now. I know there's a problem here. I'm asking a simple question and want a simple answer. I don't want tips on how to change my lifestyle. This is merely your opinion given the information and history I've provided. I will change my lifestyle, exercise, eating habits, and may even get mental help. But hypothetically, if I don't, I want to know my chances of a heart-related problem right now.
Really? I thought depression and crying and stress and anxieties could so clog your arteries just as bad as smoking or poor eating habits. Hm, weird.

Strictly speaking the answer to your question is "NO". Depression cannot cause a heart attack. All of those other things you listed can and most likely will.

Good luck to you!

No, severe depression cannot give you a heart attack. If it did, I would have had about ten heart attacks at least by now. But, when severely depressed you can suffer from panic attacks and those make you FEEL like you are having a heart attack.

I know you just want a straightforward answer and no advice or judgment....but FYI - I've been suffering from severe depression for years and so far the only anti-depressant that has worked is cymbalta. You might want to look into it. It doesn't take it totally away but as far as drug treatment goes, that has been the best for me. It also helps with the body pain that comes with the depression. Good Luck.
