Congestive Heart Failure in Dogs?My dog is a Yellow Lab and is 10 years old. She was diagnosed with congestive heart failure on Saturday. They said we would be lucky if she made it out of the hospital, and if she did, she would only have a couple of months left. Thank god, she came home today, but we are still worried. I know that her left side of her heart, which is very damaged, is unfixable, but since she is reacting so well to the medicine do you think the prognosis is different? And please do you know how we can prolong the progression of her disease? PLEASE! we are not ready to loose her yet! :(

I am sorry to hear about your dog. Unfortunately there is no cure for congestive heart failure. The treatment is to take medication that improves cardiac output, reduce the heart's workload, and control excess fluid in the lungs. You should have her on a restricted diet and exercise to help reduce the workload on the heart. When symptoms start appearing the condition is in the later stages so life expectancy is usually no more than six months to a year. As time goes on as an owner you will probably have to make a decision on how long you want to treat your dog for this depending on her quality of life.
