Little Queen

Hot on the heels of their platinum debut Dreamboat Annie, Heart released the more ambitious, less accessible Little Queen. Fortunately for them, the record contained the monolithic "Barracuda," which included one of the meanest guitar chugs since Deep Purple's "Highway Star." The song rocketed to No. 11, and the album quickly went platinum. The rest of the album, however, is less than lustrous. The mandolins that are sprinkled through the album are supposed to sound mysterious, but they're pretty laughable, and songs like "Cry to Me," "Say Hello," and "Treat Me Well" don't pack enough punch to awaken even the lightest sleeper. --Jon Wiederhorn

The Essential Heart

Article by Richard Stooker

Although Heart also consisted of some guys who played together under various names and with some success, the name of the group is now tied totally to the sisters who later joined them, first Ann, then Nancy Wilson.

Their hit song "Magic Man" is about how Mike, a draft dodger who'd run off to Canada met Ann (while secretly back in the United States), they fell in love and as her magic man, persuaded her to move in with him. She apparently really did call her mother and tell her like the lyrics in the song.

Heart itself was formed a few years later, with Mike, Ann and other guys Mike had been playing with. Nancy came up and joined shortly afterward.

That became the lead off song for their first album, the hits of which are included on this CD set - "Crazy on You," "Magic Man," and "Dreamboat Annie."

Then Barracuda came long with a much different, much harder and faster sound. The two sisters could be tough when they wanted. Apparently that was written because as reporter for Rolling Stone magazine suggested that the two sisters were incestuous lesbian lovers. Ah, but that was the glitter era of rock! I bet there were a lot of male rock stars of that time who wished they could be lesbian lovers with their sisters.

Barracuda was in the news again during the 2008 election, because Ann and Nancy Wilson refused to allow John McCain to use it to introduce his running mate Sarah Palin.

"If Looks Could Kill," another tough song, is also included here.

A few other hits are included such as "Little Queen" and "What About Love?"

The other songs are, I suppose, taken from other albums. They lack the familiarity we often seek from these kinds of CD compilations. Terrific music can surprise and delight us. Most often, I find, that the songs I'm not familiar with is because they weren't good enough to get radio play, and that's the reason why.

And in some cases, when I thought I was familiar with an artist's entire work, to hear them sing songs I wasn't familiar with.

Well, I was never such a great Heart fan. They did some good stuff, and I enjoy it when I hear some of those songs on the radio, but I never felt the need to seek out more information. Maybe it's because their success came long after I was actively paying attention to what was coming out over the radio. I was collecting jazz and punk rock, stuff I'd never hear on the radio.
