aerobics are preferred you, but there is no risk in heavy weight lifting unless there is an existing heart problem.

Cardiothoracic surgeons at Yale-New Haven Hospital have identified a possible link between serious cardiac problems and weight lifting and strength training. The study appeared in the Dec. 3, 2003 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Dr. John Elefteriades, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital, led the study. The YNHH group identified 5 healthy young individuals who suffered a devastating cardiac event called "aortic dissection" during weight lifting or strength training.

They discovered that during weight lifting and strength training, blood pressure, which is normally about 120/80, rose to as high as 300 during heavy weight lifting. In particular, these dangerous increases in blood pressure occurred when lifting amounts equivalent to one's own body weight in the bench press.

The team concluded that the dramatic rise in blood pressure from intense strength training and weight lifting ruptures the internal layer of the aorta, inducing devastating aortic dissection.

The study also recommends greater care be taken by those who lift weights and have a history of aneurysms in their family.

Unless you have some undiagnosed heart condition it should not be a limiting factor in weight lifting. Exercise of amost any kind will strengthen your cardiovascular system. At 15 your heart is most likely in the best shape it will ever be in your lifetime. In doing any exercise you should avoid prolonged periods during which your heart will be forced to maintain it's maximum rate. (for you that would be 220 - 15 =205 beats/minute) During exercising aerobically (sustained activity such as jogging or running) you should strive to maintain a heart beat of around 70 to 85% of maximum.( 145 to 175) The older you get the lower those figures should be. First of all... at your age avoid lifting the maximum weight you are capable of in any given exercise. This is because your joints, ligaments and tendons are still growiing. If you were to try lifting your absolute max weight in any exercise there is a danger of injury. Such a joint injury can set your workouts back for weeks or months. Once you are finished growing and your joints and the associated ligaments and tendons have completed growth the danger of injury from overstressing thiese joints is greatly reduced.
