Questions about Medical School?I will entering my first year of college next fall but I would like to go to medical school after. I have several questions. My first question has to to with residencies and specialties. I am thinking about internal medicine with a sub specialty in infectious disease and/or something heart related (cardiology or cardiovascular disease). Is cardiology a sub specialty of internal medicine or is it a completely different specialty from internal medicine? Also what is the avg salary of a resident, avg salary of a fellowship, and etc. At what stage does a med school grad start receiving the coveted "doctor's salary"(please don't take it the wrong way because I have a better reason to become a doctor then the pay)?
Also what is the avg salary of an internist who specializes in cardiology and an internist who specializes in infectious disease. How many internists work in hospitals (that is where I would like to work in rather than a practice).

Both Cardiology and Infectious Diseases are sub specialties of Internal Medicine.
All medical school graduates begin earning a salary when they enter a residency program. The amount of that salary varies greatly between programs. The first year of residency pays the lowest and the salary is increased incrementally through each successive year of training. You can research the location of any residency program and the salaries currently offered here: http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/2997.html
My personal opinion is that it's a lot more fun to work in a hospital than private practice, as you see a greater variety of patients and severity of illness. Some hospitals simply refer to these positions as Staff Physicians while others are employing Hospitalists. Hospitalist is a growing medical specialty, as the training is more expansive to enable the Hospitalist to attend to patients in critical care, surgical and medical units. Again, the salary will depend on your training, location and size of the hospital.
